CBD: A Beginner’s Guide

CBD has made it to the mainstream over the past few years, and there’s no doubt it’s here to stay. Predicted to be a billion dollar industry by 2025, the UK is the second largest CBD consumer market after the USA as more and more people commit to improving their wellbeing. 

 

So, what is CBD and what does it do? 

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound found in hemp plants - in fact it’s one of 113 compounds in the plant but unlike its well-known counterpart THC, CBD won’t get you high. It’s thought that CBD interacts with our body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The ECS is a network of cells and receptors that helps the body achieve optimal balance, aiding:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Supporting the immune system

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant, and combining it with a carrier oil such as coconut oil so that it can be absorbed more readily into the body. Most people take CBD oil to help relieve anxiety and stress and similarly to CBD drinks, it can be taken at any time of the day.

    How to take CBD?

    Finding methods for taking CBD is becoming much easier. CBD products are growing rapidly in popularity so choosing the right product is based on how you feel most comfortable taking it. 

    CBD OIL is the most common way to take CBD. The oil is taken under the tongue, via a pipette and held for 30-60 seconds before swallowing. This is simple, efficient and tends to take effect quickly because the CBD is absorbed straight into the bloodstream. Keep a bottle in your bag and take it out whenever you need a dose of calm.

    CBD DRINKS are great if you’re looking for something a little more social to help relax and unwind. Incorporate them into your daily routine, whether that’s post-gym, as mid-morning pick me-up or as an evening release instead of a glass of wine. 

    How long does CBD take to work? 

    Much like alcohol or caffeine, this varies for everyone. Generally CBD gets to work in as little as 15 minutes, however it affects people differently and depends on things such as: 

    • Metabolism

    • Diet

    • Weight

    • Genetics 

    The difference between CBD % and CBD mg? 

    You may see different CBD products containing either a CBD percentage or the concentration of CBD in mg. The percentage of CBD refers to the amount of the compound compared to other ingredients within it whereas the CBD mg is the total amount of CBD in a product. 

    For example, a 10ml bottle of CBD oil with 200mg CBD would be sold as 2% strength and that same bottle could also say 200mg on the label. 

    For those new to CBD, it’s advisable to start with a low dosage and gradually increase it. 

    When is the best time to take CBD? 

    One of the reasons why CBD is so popular is because it can be incorporated in so many different ways throughout the day but it can be tricky to know where to start. Here are our favourite ways to incorporate a little CBD into your day:

    1. Your morning routine 

    Rebalance and take a moment for yourself before the busy day begins.

    2. Pre or post-workout
