Hemp for the Holidays: The gift of CBD

by Chloe Palmer

Everyone knows someone who could benefit from CBD; a fellow CBD enthusiast is of course an obvious choice, but why not give CBD to someone less experienced or with less knowledge about the good stuff? CBD is popularly used as part of an overall wellness routine, helping you feel less stressed and more you, giving a moment of calm in your day. And don’t we all need a little calm?

If you have someone in mind and they don’t know much about CBD, give a brief explanation of what it is and when it can be used. At TRIP we say, CBD is derived from the hemp plant and unlike THC, it won’t get you ‘high’. Whether you’re at work, post-workout or out with friends, CBD may help to reduce stress, improve focus and help you unwind - it can be taken anywhere and anytime.

You could go into more detail and explain how CBD interacts with the ECS (endocannabinoid system), a network of receptors and messengers responsible for regulating homeostasis in our bodies. Under the strain of illness, injury or stress, a person may need more neurotransmitters (messengers) than it can produce on its own. CBD is one of the many cannabinoids found in the hemp plant and it’s thought that the compound mimics the effects of cannabinoids in your body, influencing receptors of the ECS, helping you feel more calm and balanced.

Depending on how you take it will affect how quickly you feel the benefits, for example CBD oils, taken sublingually, are absorbed straight into your bloodstream whereas CBD drinks enter your digestive system first meaning that you’ll feel the effects of CBD oil before you feel the effects from CBD drinks, however CBD drinks are perfect for social occasions (they make great cocktail mixers!), as an afternoon pick-me-up or for Netflix and chilling with your favourite festive movies.

Before giving CBD, you may want to do some research into the different types of CBD options available. There are essentially three different types of CBD products available, CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD and full-spectrum CBD, and understanding the differences could help determine the best gift for the recipient.

CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD. It contains no other compounds found in the hemp plant, except for the CBD itself, although legally it can have trace amounts of up to 0.2% TBC - not significant enough to give any kind of altered state of mind.

Broad spectrum CBD isn’t solely CBD but for the most part doesn’t contain THC either, but it does contain other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant.

Full spectrum CBD contains a small amount of all the components found in the hemp plant, including THC.

While some use CBD for issues connected to sleep, depression or anxiety, others use it for physical ailments such as sore muscles, pain and issues related to inflammation. Although studies into CBD are ongoing, these research studies suggest that CBD could help with reducing stress and anxiety, easing pain, reducing inflammation, supporting the immune system as well as improving focus, productivity and creativity. With studies suggesting that CBD can potentially help physical, emotional and mental conditions, it’s no wonder that more and more people have incorporated it into their daily routines whether that be by taking a small amount of CBD oil daily or a couple of delicious and refreshing sparkling drinks. Either way, everyone deserves to feel and be their best selves - try it for yourself and see how it goes. Happy holidays.
